Stephanie Hanlon’s Portfolio
Through my Internet portfolio, I hope to further disseminate the news I cover, highlight my achievements, and track and analyze my journalism career.
I am currently a reporter and photographer for a daily newspaper on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I also perform layout and managerial functions when needed.
After college I chose to begin my career in a small town, rather than compete in a large market. This is not because I underestimate my talents, but because I felt my opportunities for growth and knowledge would be greater in a small market.
Although I received a very dynamic journalism education from Long Island University, my on-the-job education at the St. Croix Avis has proved to be priceless. In the working world scenarios become reality and you realize quickly how high the stakes can be. While confronting ethical and legal issues that are often intimidating, calling on my journalism education has guided me to make the right decisions.
Working in a U.S. territory, which has little say in national politics, has been educational in surprising ways. It has been much easier to isolate government, private and corporate functions in the Virgin Islands. And while familiarizing me with stateside politics, the international-Caribbean flavor has broadened my overall perspective on the world.
And although I continue to learn and dream of future endeavors, I am appreciative of the fact that I am one of the few people in this world who has found a career that is both fascinating and fulfilling.
Furthermore, this Web site is a product and representation of my most treasured journalistic trait: honesty.
