For Women

I am a women, mother of a daughter. I am fascinated with ancestry and the knowledge that each women is connected to every women before her following her maternal line through her Y Chromosome, her haplogroup. Part of us lives on in our daughters that they will pass on to their daughters. and an unbroken chain of women continues. It may seem strange but this is one of my passions. I like to think of this chain of women that led to me, all mothers, all survivors in some way. I feel women bring to humanity a nest of love and care, at least under the right circumstances. But the world has not for a long time embraced or nurtured that potential. I see it in the many women I’ve photographed, that legacy of survival and nurturing that brought them before me.

Just the mere fact of their born sex communicates to me that they know my struggles, I know their struggles, at least a few of them. There are things that only another women can advice them on or support them through. This series wasn’t particularly intentional, but formed as I began observing my trends, my photographic connections, the moments I decided to press the shutter on.

Often misunderstood, neglected, abused, manipulated – so many things that plague us. But we survive, thrive, breakdown every door before us and skillfully maneuver around all the dangers. It’s no lighthearted affair, I can tell you. But this is what I’d like to keep doing – tapping into each of their magical powers so that perhaps I might find my own.

Using a Rolleiflex, a fully mechanical camera crafted in the 1950s, I embrace the timeless artistry of analog photography, allowing the inherent intimacy and authenticity of the medium to mirror the depth and richness of the feminine experience.

In a world often defined by superficial standards and narrow definitions of womanhood, this stands as a tribute to the depth, complexity, and beauty inherent in every woman. It is my hope that through these portraits, viewers will not only see themselves reflected, but also find resonance, inspiration, and empowerment in the shared journey of womanhood that unites us all.
