Lilium is a project that delves into the archival process of memory, exploring the keepsakes and cherished items we carry with us—each a vessel of personal history and emotion. Surrounded by treasured objects like my grandmothers’ wedding rings and delicate handkerchiefs, I found myself reflecting on the spirits of those who have shaped my life. These items, such as my grandfather’s ties and my grandmother’s lingerie, embody both the love and loss that intertwine in our memories.
Through this lens, I also examine my wedding ring, old notebooks filled with thoughts and dreams, and the nostalgia of VHS tapes that transport me back in time. A leather jacket from a past love whispers of bittersweet connections, while records evoke the soundscapes of moments long gone. Each object holds stories waiting to be revealed, and I aim to photograph them in a way that honors their histories while allowing movement to represent their spirits.
In this project, I use movement and selective colorization to breathe life into these objects, transforming them from mere mementos into dynamic representations of the relationships and experiences they encapsulate. This photographic ritual invites viewers to engage with the emotions these items elicit, allowing memories of love and loss to coexist. By weaving prose and poetry into the narrative, I deepen the exploration of how these keepsakes shape our identities and the lessons we carry forward. The title Lilium reflects the dual nature of these symbols: purity intertwined with death, healing intertwined with celebration, showcasing the profound interconnectedness of love, loss, and memory. Through this journey, I seek to honor the legacies of those we’ve lost while embracing the enduring beauty of their impact on our lives.
